I work in multiple visual mediums, most of them having roots in photography, which was my first and still my most consistent outlet for creativity. Photography is a tool for me to explore and understand the surrounding environment at a deeper level. When I look through the lens, there is usually one tiny detail that catches my eye and manual focusing allows me to see the details more clearly before pulling back and taking in the greater picture. It is meditative, and I get lost in the moment. The process takes precedence over the final image. My hope is that the feeling of that moment is conveyed when sharing my photography with others.
In my work I intend to draw attention to beauty in small details that might otherwise be looked over or taken for granted. I choose to amplify this beauty in what I create to deepen pathways of positive thinking.
There are long periods that I go without doing more than making photos in passing. I am motivated to make time for creative wanderings because it returns a sense of self and calm.
The cameras I use are mix of film (120 & 35mm) and digital. The draw of film is that it is more about the process in the moment when there is no option to review images. I began using digital when it was tricky to be changing film all the time while hiking with young kiddos. Now that they are a little older, I have gravitated back to film.
I hope that through the curiosity in and discussion of the wonder of our natural surroundings that we can find common ground in a very divisive social environment.
