April’s Featured Artist: Pam Rooney

My name is Pam Rooney. I have been living in Hibbing for the past 4 years since moving from International Falls.
When we were young, our Mom would sit us down at the table and we would draw, color, and play lots of word and drawing games – it’s what she loved to do and my siblings and I thought it was much fun.

Drawing faces has always been interesting to me and I drew charcoal portraits for a long time.  About 10 years ago I began painting, wishing I would have started much earlier!  It’s a meaningful way to spend my spare time.

I also take a lot of pictures – mostly of my grandchildren, who make great subjects and I find myself smiling while painting them.  It’s so much fun in the process to sometimes see their parents or another relative pop through them.

With a desire to create more than just portraits, I’ll sometimes try painting scenery or animals.  Acrylic paints are what I’ve been using, although I’ve done a few with oils in the past.

I have a lot of hobbies, so just being creative with any kind of art means so much to me. Painting is comforting, relaxing and something I can do. It’s satisfying to complete a painting and make someone smile when they see it’s someone they love or somewhere they’ve been.
