GMO Update

The House of Representatives votes to ban states from labeling GMOs event though 9 out of 10 Americans want to know what is in the food they consume. H.R. 1599 is a prime example of how corporate money corrupts the political process in order to create laws that protect corporate profits at the expense of American citizens. According to a report from Open Secrets, a project of the Center for Responsive Politics, the 275 members of the U.S. House who voted in favor of H.R. 1599 received $29.9 million in contributions from the agribusiness and food industries in the 2014 cycle. Herbicide acetochlor linked to cancer risk (The Organic Center)

A study published in the International Journal of Cancer found that occupational exposure to acetochlor increased the risk of developing melanoma, pancreatic, lung, and colorectal cancer. This study is one of the first to examine the relationship between exposure to acetochlor and human cancer risk. Findings show that high-level exposure to acetochlor may be linked to an increased risk of colorectal cancer.

Organic agriculture and soil health (The Organic Center)

A study published in the journal Sustainable Agriculture Research supports previous findings that organic agricultural practices improve soil health by increasing and improving microorganism activity, nutrient availability and soil structure. READ MORE

The Consumer’s Right to Know GMO Bill (Right to Know MN)

In January 2015, The Consumer Right To Know GMO bills were presented before the 89th Minnesota legislature in both the Senate (SF335) and House (HF351) to label genetically modified foods. The GMO labeling bill will require food manufacturers and retailers to label packages, and fresh produce, which are produced with genetic engineering by Jan. 1, 2017. READ MORE.
